Hospital design has had decades of dedicated research-driven improvements in design. Behavioral health facilities have remained underfunded, outdated, and stigmatized compared to hospital design. As Healthcare designers, we see first-hand how physical environments can directly impact patient health outcomes. Thoughtful and patient-centered design can reduce stress, aggression, and even suicide risk. As October 10, 2025 is World Mental Health Day, it is important to reflect on the impact of design in spaces that care for vulnerable populations.
Thoughtful design choices for behavioral health facilities include safe furnishings, nature, natural lighting, private spaces, and more. Research has shown that these choices influence patient health outcomes, satisfaction, emotional state, and safety. Using evidence-based design strategies we create environments that minimize harmful behaviors, reduce stress, and support staff and patients.
We work with several behavioral health clients, one of which is Hightop Health.

Hightop Health is the premier outpatient mental health group committed to setting the standard for what better mental health care looks like. By focusing on more accessibility and treating the root cause rather than the symptoms alone, their mission is to change lives with comprehensive, evidence-based, integrated mental health care.

With Hightop Health, LeVino Jones has been able to contribute to destigmatizing behavioral health facilities and help the vulnerable populations get the care they deserve. The built environment plays a crucial role in saving lives, that is why we here at LeVino Jones, Design For Health.
